GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRIES CAMEROON
What is Christian Counseling?
Good Samaritan Ministries Cameroon: A Divine Calling to Teach the Kingdom of God
In 1976, upon the ancient walls of Nineveh, Mama Bettie Michelle (of blessed memory) received a divine assignment that led to the establishment of Good Samaritan Ministries (GSM) in Cameroon. This ministry, an integral part of the international organization headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, USA, is not a denomination nor a local church. Instead, it is a Christian counseling ministry, deeply inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), with a profound commitment to “Teach Nothing but the Kingdom of God.”
Understanding Christian Counseling
1. The Foundation of Christian Counseling
Christian Counseling is a transformative process where a trained counsellor aids an afflicted individual to view life from God’s perspective, illuminated by His Word. This journey encourages the abandonment of unproductive human ways in favour of embracing God’s paths, leading to true healing. Isaiah 55:8-9 encapsulates this principle, highlighting the superior nature of God’s thoughts and ways above our own. This suggests that understanding and aligning with the divine perspective offers a path to true healing.
2. A Holistic Approach
GSM adopts a holistic approach to counseling, aiming for inner healing and deliverance from physical and spiritual bondages. This method is rooted in the belief that true freedom comes from addressing the entire being. Matthew 11:28 and Psalms 34:17 underpin this approach, promising deliverance for those who seek God in their affliction. The ministry identifies various forms of spiritual bondages, including lack of compassion, uncontrolled anger, and addictions, based on 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, emphasizing that liberation from these constraints is possible through faith and divine intervention.
3. Inviting Divine Intervention
Christian Counseling is fundamentally about seeking God’s intervention to resolve human challenges. Isaiah 45:6-7 and Psalms 24:1 affirm God’s sovereignty and creative power, declaring Him the sole solution to our problems. This perspective is central to GSM’s counseling philosophy, which holds that only God can provide genuine healing and solutions.
4. Leveraging God’s Promises
The counseling process includes taking advantage of God’s promises for healing, as He has made provisions for our salvation, healing, and deliverance in His Word. Psalms 107:20 and John 3:16 are pivotal scriptures that GSM relies on, advocating for a counseling approach that guides individuals from darkness into God’s light, encouraging a deep-seated faith in His word for healing.
5. Achieving Healing and Deliverance
Christian Counseling assists afflicted individuals in achieving healing and deliverance by knowing God’s Word, accepting His truth, and embracing it with faith. Romans 10:17 and John 8:32 are foundational scriptures that support this aspect of counseling, emphasizing the transformative power of faith and truth in God’s Word.
6. The Ministry of Reconciliation
GSM views Christian Counseling as a ministry of reconciliation orin other words; “The Ministry of Jesus Christ”.
It aims to restore the broken relationship between individuals and God through Jesus Christ, based on
2 Corinthians 5:18-21.
This reconciliatory approach is seen as essential for healing and spiritual growth.
7. An Effective Tool for Evangelism
Christian Counseling is also considered an effective tool for evangelism, with the ultimate goal of reconciling fallen humanity with God the Father. This aspect of counseling addresses the root causes of suffering, sickness, and death, which are seen as the fruits of sin.
8. Recognizing and Repenting Sins
Part of the counseling process involves helping individuals to recognise and repent of the sins that have led to their affliction, encouraging genuine confession and repentance for healing. Luke 5:31-32 and Luke 15:10 highlight Jesus Christ’s role in calling sinners to repentance, celebrating the joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.
Why People Seek Counseling
Individuals come to GSM for various reasons, including the need for solutions to life’s challenges, spiritual attacks, mental health issues like depression, and desires for spiritual growth. GSM upholds the belief in Jesus Christ as the ultimate solution to all human problems, capable of miraculous healings and interventions.
The Counseling Process
The counseling process at GSM involves three key parties: the client, the Christian counsellor, and the Holy Spirit. This triad works together to facilitate healing and deliverance through God’s Word and prayers of faith.
GSM offers its counselling services free of charge, embodying the principle of freely giving as outlined in Matthew 10:7-10, supported by voluntary donations and offerings.
